Some of the bikes sold at these stores aren’t suitable for upgrade. I have been most impressed with the Hyper Hydroform. For under $199, I found it to be better than anticipated out of the box — if properly set up. I have a few big-box bikes that I consider to be adequate.

They can provide service far and above what you’ll get from most big-box stores. Recently, there’s been a trickle down, so features previously only seen on LBS [local bike shop] bikes are creeping into big-box bikes at a fraction of the cost. You also have a large variety of bike choices at big-box stores. There’s usually a bike type for any taste — all on the cheap.

At the other end, the font center was moderate and reasonable. It wasn’t the super-hyper-extra-long enduro-specific wheelbase I expected, and while for a minute that was disappointing, the disappointment was only relative to my expectations rather than the reality of riding the bike long term. Testing is a big part of what happens at BEAST; every component they build is built to significantly exceed ISO testing standards and what that means, in my experience, is stiffness. Best hyper bike present ever according to my son , everyone loves it everywhere we go.We go to a lot of motorcycle events and my little one is the attraction ?. Easy to connect to Bluetooth, the smoke and lights work perfectly and the speed let me tell you he goes up to 17mph ? the thing starts beeping when he goes higher than 10 , hopefully you guys make a bigger version for years old because my son will need one soon. The newest addition to Vittoria’s lineup of trail dominators is here.

As for the dropper, I fiddled with it a few times at the start but otherwise just got it out of the way so I could ride. The dropper is designed for super quick and easy bleeding, which refreshingly takes significantly less time to do in reality than it takes to watch the 18-second video on their website about it. It’s nothing about the effects of tires, suspension, and steering geometry, but the stiff bars worked nicely in the context of this bike. The BEAST rims also felt incredibly stiff both vertically and laterally, but again complemented the dynamic handling characteristics of a big squishy bike quite well. They were very light and felt incredibly solid, sustaining zero permanent damage from being repeatedly smashed against rocks when the tires bottomed out.

I’m normally a fan of flex everywhere but in this instance, the super stiff BEAST parts kept the bike feeling positive and surprisingly efficient on climbs. And surprisingly, he often finds a diamond in the rough — or at least a salvageable build he can later modify. (In fairness, he finds total lemons too.) So I caught up with him to find out why he loves box-store bikes, whether it’s ever a good buy, and what you can do to make a 200-plus-dollar Walmart bike a respectable ride.

Contrary to my belief that it’s a bike for riding trails, I found out later that it’s instead a bike for riding at trail centers, which I guess is proper mountain biking. But in reality, I only spend a fraction of my time on mountain bikes. With few exceptions, we all like to think of ourselves as hardcore mountain bikers.

This Hyper Havoc Mountain Bike is the key to outdoor fun. It has a lightweight aluminum frame that lets users ride harder for longer, providing a reliable experience. Becoming accustomed to riding more dynamically, going full pelt into my own personal unknown, and coming out the other side surprisingly unscathed became—through practice—a matter of course that has brought more play to all of my riding. Gravel became road cycling for mountain bikers and, at the same time, the gateway drug to mountain biking for road cyclists. There is also a simplicity to just making tires and clearances bigger for comfort and traction.
