Coleman Sundome Dome 4 Review Tested by GearLab

I have used this tent in the wind, rain, snow, and sun without any problems. We bought a replacement pole for the tent when we got home, but have since turned this into the backup/extra tent for when we take friends. For ourselves, we did what we should have done all along – Spent the money on a quality tent that will last us many years of camping (We bought the REI Base Camp 6). Now even with those cons I’ve mentioned this is still a worthy tent and I am pleased with my purchase and the tent’s performance so far. If one of my poles breaks I could spend $36 dollars on some aluminum poles and still only have a hundred dollars invested and even at that price this tent’s still a bargain. Provide additional weather protection over front door and back window.

It will be great for light to medium duty use, but is not a heavy duty camper. I did seal the seems when I bought it, a practice I do with all my tents. So, in the couple of rain storms I’ve experienced I haven’t any bad leaks. I did have a bit of mist blow in through the ends, since the rain fly doesn’t actually come too far down the tent. As I said earlier, I haven’t had this tent in a bad storm yet, I think heavy winds would possibly blow more rain in and make water inside the tent an issue. Sure, maybe four really good friends or close family members will fit in the tent, if they are below average size.

It does provide a little support but not nearly enough, especially with the small 8.5mm poles. It should have 4 structural guy out loops about half way up the rainfly, 1 loop on each pole. Of course if I were to replace the fiberglass poles with aluminum poles this would strengthen the structure considerably. This is a great option for first-time campers and budget-wise campers as myself.

The tent would work for four people in an emergency, otherwise the tent is just large enough for the both of us, a small carry-on travel bag to keep our clothes dry, and coleman ice chest a queen size air mattress. My one complaint in this area is the flimsy fiberglass tent poles. I’m not a fiberglass hater, but these are a little on the thin side.

Having said that, most casual campers who take decent care of their gear should see many summers of camping with the Sundome. The coated polyester fabrics on the fly and walls are rugged and durable. The interior of the Sundome 6 measures 10’x10’ (100sqft) with a peak height of 6’ in the center. Although these numbers by themselves would make this tent quite appealing compared to other 6-person tents, the dome-style structure of the Sundome means that there is limited verticality in the wall.

If you’re heading into heavy winds and rainy nights, you’re best looking for something else. The easy and simplicity of set up also makes the Coleman Sundome a smart choice for family camping trips. Not only does it cut down set up time and leave more time for enjoying your trip, teaching kids to set this tent up is made easy thanks to the design. Another selling point of the Skydome tent is the 20% more headroom, because these pole clips at the top of the tent pull the tent body upward and outward. It definitely feels a little bit roomier, but whether it’s actually 20% more headroom, I’m not really sure.

There are plenty of other options to consider if the Coleman sundome doesn’t feel like the right tent for you. You shouldn’t expect this tent to last forever – after all, it’s a low-cost option. But there are some nifty extra features to help extend the life of this high-value tent. When compared to other low-budget models, the Coleman Sundome does an impressive job of keeping the tent free from condensation.
