Coleman Sundome 6Person Dark Room Tent

As a result, the headroom drops off dramatically if you’re standing anywhere but in the center of the tent. Most campers will find themselves hunching over when traversing much of this tent. There are four rather simple pockets lining the inside of the tent, which is far from ample but still double what you’ll get from Coleman’s Instant Tent 6. There’s also a bit of ventilation thanks to a ground vent at the back that you’ll need to stake for it to remain open.

Since the 4 person size was on sale, I decided to go for a bigger tent even though it would only be the two of us on our trips. Here I’ll detail some of the pros and cons of the Coleman Sundome 4 Person Tent. Once the tent was pitched, I did a walk around and noted any prior damage from the previous user. Tent poles are constructed of fiberglass, which is heavier than their lightweight aluminum counterparts. The  Coleman Sundome 2’s tent body and fly material seemed fairly durable. The bathtub floor is thicker and more rigid than floors of other tents I own.

Another Kelty tent to have on your radar is their Tallboy 6. It’s a step up in price from the Discovery above at $230, but you do get a number of upgrades, including a lighter weight (14 lbs. 1 oz.), taller peak height (72 in.), and smaller packed size. The Kelty uses slightly higher-quality materials than the Sundome, but we find it hard to justify spending more for less space and similar overall performance. With practice, this tent could easily be put together in a little more than half that time, and this feat can definitely be accomplished by only one person. Although sleeves do make it easier for one person to erect the tent, they tend to wear out with age. The poles lock into the corners using a pin-and-ring setup.

Before Mike and I’s recent camping trip to Letchworth State Park in Upstate New York, I was looking to purchase an affordable but durable tent for us to use. After some heavy research, I landed on the coleman instant tent tent. Coleman is a tried and true brand that’s been around for over 100 years and I own several other Coleman products.

The one other thing that surprised us about the size was the tear-down of the tent and long-term storage. Typically once you pull a tent out of it’s storage for the first time it is difficult to get back in the duffel once you finish camping. In this case it was actually quite easy to wrap the tent back up into the storage duffel that is 2 feet long and 6 inches square. It weighs about 8 pounds so it’s relatively light for a 4 person tent as well. The most important part of the size for us was that the tent is big enough to fit a queen-sized air mattress.

At only $136.99, the 6 offers a budget alternative to its high-end competitors, while still managing to squeeze in a few bells and whistles. And although it has a rather durable floor and a decent choice in materials for the canopy and rainfly, the vulnerable fiberglass poles give cause for concern. In addition, Coleman’s somewhat infamous build quality gives the Sundome a questionable lifespan. However, for occasional use this tent should serve its intended purpose.

Coleman tents are tested in winds up to 35 miles per hour to ensure they will stand up to mild winds. This is helped in part by the 11mm shock-corded fiberglass tent poles. They are thicker than poles designed for backpacking which are usually around 8.5mm. The Coleman sundome would have been a GREAT option for a trip I recently took.

Set up camp in a compact, yet spacious tent with the Coleman® Sundome® 3-Person Dome Tent. If it rains, this tent Keeps You Dry…Guaranteed™, thanks to the WeatherTec™ system, which uses a tub floor with patented corner welds, protected seams, and a covered zipper to help keep water out. Meanwhile, coleman instant tent the compact dome shape and a strong frame are tested to withstand 35+ MPH winds. You’ll get even more weather protection from a door awning and an included rainfly. Setup is simple with snag-free, continuous pole sleeves; the patented pin-and-ring system; and snag-free Insta-Clip™ suspension.

Two poles run diagonally between corners to give the body of the tent it’s dome-shape. This means any camping gear or equipment has to be stored inside the main body of the tent, cutting down on space for campers to sleep. From the netting to the poles to the rainfly, many of the main components of this tent are not built to last. For example, the string that connects the pole sections together broke on our first pitch. Long story short, if you do decide to go with the Sundome, just be sure to have a pole patch kit available.
